According to the King of Xbox Phil Spencer, Starfield has surpassed one million concurrent players in its first full day of launch. It’s slightly confusing because in reality Starfield actually launched last week for any with the Premium Edition, while the rest of us unwilling to fork out even more money had to wait.

Regardless, it already had an impressive start in its “early access” phase when it managed a concurrent player peak of 236,834. Since then the game has managed to peak at 269,177 on SteamDB following its full launch.

Phil Spencer’s claim, then, indicates that around 740,000 people must be playing on PC via Gamepass or on console. That’s obviously a very rough guess.

However the numbers play out, it’s an impressive stat. But perhaps not as impressive as some might have expected given the levels of hype behind Starfield’s launch.

Baldur’s Gate 3, the currently highest rated game of the year on Opencritic, peaked at 373,504 in the last 24 hours, while Starfield achieved its 269,177 16 hours ago. In fact, as I write this there is currently around 60,000 more people playing Baldur’s Gate 3 than Starfield, which is slightly surprising considering Starfield just launched.

Gamepass undoubtedly swings these numbers, though, making it hard to really judge. If Spencer’s claims are correct that Starfield has surely surpassed Baldur’s Gate 3’s highest peak which was 875,343. The fact that the PlayStation 5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 launched later than the PC version obviously impacts the total number, though. I wouldn’t be shocked if Baldur’s Gate 3 also would have gone over a million concurrent players if both versions had launched at the same time.

It’s certainly a big step up for Bethesda considering their last game, Redfall, peaked at a measly 6,124 on Steam. Deathloop fared better at 20,094.

Where do these numbers put Starfield on the list of Bethesda’s biggest PC games, though? According to SteamDB, Starfield is 3rd on the list behind Skyrim by only around 17,000. Top of the charts is Fallout 4 which peaked out at a mighty 472,962, meaning Starfield has quite a bit to go to claim the top spot.
