After numerous reports and rumours over the past year, Sony has officially announced a new version of the PlayStation 5. While not officially called the PlayStation 5 Slim, that’s exactly what it is.

According to Sony, the new versions of the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition are 30% smaller than their predecessors. It’s a pretty good reduction in size. The new digital version’s footprint will be 358 × 96 × 216 mm, compared to the previous version’s 390 x 104 x 260mm.

Aside from being smaller, the new consoles seem to be identical to the old ones in terms of power and performance, although there may be small tweaks under the hood. Doubtless there will be some tech-savvy folks out there who will rip the new machines to pieces in order to figure out exactly how Sony managed to shrink the PS5.

Both Slim versions will go on sale in North America in November, from select retailers and PlayStation directly. It’ll roll out globally after that.

If you opt to go for the new PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition but change your mind later on, then Sony has you covered with the new attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY. Installation seems to be as simple as popping off the console’s side panel, slotting in the drive and whacking the new, chunky side-panel on. Voila, you can now play physical games and 4K Blu-rays.

Finally, Sony also revealed a new optional vertical stand for 29.99 USD | 29.99 EURO | 24.99 GBP | 3,980 JPY. This is because they also said the new version of the console will come with a horizontal stand. The existing PS5 model has a crappy stand but it does let users choose whether they want the console vertical or horizontal. Now, you’ll have to pay extra for the choice. Er, thanks Sony?
