Grab your swords and coax Roach down from the roof because CD Projekt Red has just announced Geralt of Rivia is returning for a brand new expansion for The Witcher 3.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: it isn’t launching until 2027, with no specific release date given. Prior reports suggested a 2026 release.

Now, let’s get on to the good stuff. As per the previous rumours and leaks, the expansion pack – which is titled Songs of the Past – will once again feature the gravelly-voice Geralt in a new adventure.

It has been co-developed by CD projekt Red and Fool’s theory, the same company charged with making The Witcher 1 remake.

And that’s pretty much it. The press release contains little other in the way of details, except that more information will be released in the “late summer” of this year.

Apparently, the reveal was intended to be made tomorrow during an anniversary livestream for the Blood & Wine DLC, but on social media CD Projekt Red said: “We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow, but let’s say we found something we didn’t yet expect on RED Launcher”

As far as I can tell, some eagle-eyed folks spotted some uploads revealing Songs of the Past on the launcher. It’s a bit of a shame it ruined the big reveal, really.

The minimum system requirements for The Witcher 3 and Songs of the Past have also been updated on PC. The biggest changes are that Windows 11 will now be required, and HDDs will no longer be supported. Nor will any CPUs and GPUs not supported by Windows 11.

If you don’t have those requirements, CD Projekt Red says you can revert to the previous version of the game to continue playing as normal. Check here for all the details on the requirements and reverting process.

Generally, the rumours and community belief say this new expansion will act as a bridge between The Witcher 3 and the upcoming Witcher 4 which stars Ciri as the leading character. Although the name of the expansion would also seem to hint at something which takes place earlier in the timeline. I may be trying to read too much into the title, though.

It’s also said to be roughly the same size as the Blood & Wine expansion.

With more than 60 million copies of The Witcher 3 sold, CD Projekt Red will be hoping that a good portion of that audience turns up for the new expansion. And I’ll probably be one of them.
