Before going into the show, Matty Booty of Xbox said they wouldn’t be tackling the broader Xbox strategy during Xbox Games Showcase. That was true, to a point, but in reality we saw Xbox make yet another sharp turn by announcing Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are Xbox exclusives.

What they actually said was that both games were “Xbox console exclusives”, a very confusing term that, in my mind, very clearly says they wouldn’t be coming to PC, either. But apparently, that’s not true as Xbox also had to clarify that there will be PC versions of both games. They are still use the bloody stupid “Xbox console exclusive”, though.

Anyway, there was some debate about whether both games would be timed exclusives, perhaps coming to PlayStation 5 down the road.

“As part of our focus on the return of XBOX, we also announced that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be XBOX console exclusives. These are not timed exclusives,” said Joe Skrebels, Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief.

However, any games already annuounced as coming to PS5 will stick to that promise, they said. Fable and Halo: Campaign Evolved, for example, were already announced for PlayStation 5.

Of course, it’s hard to take Xbox at its word right now. They’ve flip-flopped so often that I wouldn’t be shocked to see both games on PlayStation 5 in a year or two. Sorry Xbox, you’ve not regained that level fo trust just yet.

As for future titles, there’s still no concrete word on whether Xbox intends on returning to all of its titles being exclusive, or if it will be a case-by-case basis.

Regardless, it’s another big change for the brand.
