One of the best parts of any Company of Heroes game usually occurs when everything is going wrong, and you wind up in a desperate last stand against a tide of enemy soldiers. It’s stressful but oh so exhilarating when your ragtag line manages to hold the line. And that’s what Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand is all about, really. Holding the line. Forever.

This standalone expansion to Company of Heroes 3 will launch this month on July 29 on Steam for $29.99/£23.99/€28.99, alongside the 2.5.0 update for the main game. There’s a 10% launch period discount on offer, plus an addition 20% if you already own Company of Heroes 3.

The expansion is promising a roguelite progression system with persistent upgrades, 36 boss units with special abilities, 18 different events, 8 difficulty levels, 5 battlegrounds, faction specific upgrade trees and a new announcer voice-over. All of this across 12 escalating waves of enemy combatants attempting to introduce you to a new form of massage therapy called being riddled with high-speed metal. There’s also an Endless Mode if you really want to capture the feeling of inevitable defeat.

The challenge Relic faces here is justifying the price-tag. $30 is a lot for what at a glance reads like a game-mode made out of recycled. Relic’s going to have to prove that the gameplay systems are good enough to warrant it. I’m curious enough to consider giving it a shot.
