It’s time for another Weekend Whammy my friends, and this week I’m going to be talking about Death Stranding, Destroy All Humans! and Ubisoft’s implosion. I mean, I will be if I can get my head on straight. With some of the restrictions lifting my youngest niece was able to come around and stay for the night. And for the next night. And the night after that. And then another one, just to be sure. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again. Man, that kid can talk!
The more cities I build, parks I run and businesses I manage it becomes clearer and clearer that I should never be allowed in a position of power. Somehow my ventures always end up in flames, at least three dead donkeys and half the population having been abducted by aliens. Long story. Still, despite my absolute uselessness at planning a city I still love the city-builder genre. I get an immense sense of pride when I finally get everything running just right. So here we are with Anno 1800, the latest in the long-running series. But does it let me cock things up in new and exciting ways?
Reflecting on yet another failed attempt at an extreme track in Trials Rising at some ungodly hour in the morning, I come to the conclusion that this series has probably evoked more emotional responses out of me than the majority of story-driven games. This is literally a game about riding a bike from one end of a track to the end without falling off too many times. Somehow, though, it can make me laugh, smile, yell, get angry and threaten to murder my friends. I didn’t murder them, though. Honest. It was just heat of the moment. Now hand me a shovel, would you?
A few years back Ubisoft made the wise decision to halt their yearly release of Assassin’s Creed titles in favour of taking the series back to the workshop for a revamp. Many, myself included, hoped this would be the company finally figuring out that annual releases burn out the audience and don’t provide time for the developers to take player feedback into account properly. The year off proved successful as Ubisoft launched Assassin’s Creed: Origins to a pretty good reception. But now it seems we’re back on an annual cycle once again as a year later we’ve got a new AssCreed game.

Rising from the ashes of Rainbow Six: Patriots comes Rainbow Six: Siege, Ubisoft’s attempt at bringing the old series back to life for a new generation of consoles via the medium of competitive multiplayer. With a clearly troubled development there’s been some considerable doubt as to whether Siege was going to be any good. Well, I’ve some great news; it’s actually quite a bit fun.
