XCOM: Enemy Unknown Officially Announced

Alright, so it’s fair to say that fans weren’t too happy when 2K Marine announced that the long-awaited sequel to X-COM was going to be a shooter. But now the burning rage of fans across the globe should be quenched as Gameinformer have revealed that their February cover will be of a new XCOM game, titled Enemy Unknown. And it’s going to be a strategy game, so you can put away your pitchforks. For now.

Obviously details on the game are being kept under-wraps until Gameinformer’s February issue hits doorsteps, but they did mention that the issue will be going in-depth on things such as destructible tactical environments, the interaction between the real-time strategic view and the turn-based combat, and how the XCOM organization improves its capabilities as the war rages on.

“It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM,” said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. “We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise.”

And if you’re sort of staring vaguely at the screen, at a loss as to what this is all about, the original X-COM games, which can claim a hugely dedicated cult following, are widely regarded as some of the best turn-based strategy games there have ever been, with the first game, X-COM: Enemy Unknown, often being hailed by critics and gamers alike as one of the greatest games ever created. The premise is simple enough: you take control of a unit created to battle aliens (called X-COM) and must save the earth from invasion by aforementioned aliens. One of the games major components was its two views: the first, called Geoscape, provided a global view of Earth which was used to manage bases, track enemy movement and more. The second view, Battlescape, was used when you actually engaged the enemy, at which point you’d take command of your troops and get to work.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be arriving on Xbox 360, PC and Playstation 3 sometime in Fall of this year.
