In the wake of the recent news that EA and DICE have acquired the exclusive rights to make Star Wars games Avalanche Studios have revealed that they were almost signed to make a massive open-world Star Wars game.
former Avalanche Studio Manager Oskar Burman Tweeted: “Actually, wanting to work with SW goes deep in Swe [Sweden]. Long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, we almost got that deal when I was at Avalanche.”
Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Avalanche Christofer Sundberg replied by saying: “If they had given us the deal back then LucasArts would be alive today. A massive SW open world game! We would have rocked it.”
Burman responded by saying: “Very much agree. You’d done wonders with the SW license. Single player, open world, travel in galaxy, do missions. Yummy!”
Oskar Burman worked at Avalanche between 2005 and 2009, so exactly when this open-world game was proposed is a mystery. Was it perhaps going to be Star Wars 1313 until Lucas Arts decided to develop it internally?
Regardless it’s a moot point now. Still, it would have been interesting to see Avalanche tackle the license – who knows what they could have done with it?
