For understandable reasons Assassin’s Creed: Unity is hogging most of the spotlight, but Ubisoft are due to release Assassin’s Creed: Rogue at the same time, and while it may not look as good its narrative seems compelling.
The newly release story trailer gives us an idea of why Shay Cormac chose to abandon the assassin order and side with the Templars; the death of innocents at the hands of the assassins. It seems Shay is on a quest for redemption, and through that Rogue has a fascinating premise which will hopefully finally let us delve deeper into the templars and what they stand for.
Throughout the series the Templars have mostly been potrayed as the bad guys, but there have been moments where they’ve been presented in a different light, giving players glimpses into an order who may not actually be as bad as they seem. Playing as Shay it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft opt to handle the narrative. Hopefully they’ll be brave enough to avoid the predictable “Shay realises the error of his ways and rejoins the Assassins” plot and commit fully to fleshing out the Templars as more than just cartoon baddies.
Finally the trailer shows a few very familiar faces in the form of Adawale, the former quartermaster of Edward Kenway, and Haytham Kenway, father of Connor from Assassin’s Creed III.
